I never knew how to differentiate whether I was Lazy or Burnt Out.
I used to think I could fool myself into believing that I was burnt out when I was just lazy, and vice versa.
To figure out if I was Lazy or Burnt out, I listened to Emma Chamberlain’s podcast that talked about being lazy or Burnt Out. In that episode she listed out factors that differentiated a Burnt out from being Lazy.
Here is the summary :
Laziness:
- No motivation
- Task avoided due to procrastination
- No physical or emotional hurting
- Breaks bring back productivity.
Burnout:
- Persistent exhaustion, both physical and mental.
- Physically, unable to operate tasks.
- Emotional distress.
- Required significant recovery time.
- Mental Breakdown.
The factors I listed convinced me that I was just being lazy and that I could push myself harder. So, I did. I kept pushing—harder and harder. Even when my body felt tired, I told myself, “Hey, you’re just being lazy.” This cycle continued for three weeks.
But then on a random thurday, it hit me. I physically couldn’t do anything. It wasn’t just tiredness anymore—it was complete exhaustion. My mind was fully in shutdown mode. I had a series of mental breakdowns and tried to pick myself back up, but I was out of luck.
This is when I realized.
I had pushed myself and turned my laziness into full-blown burnout.
So here’s a friendly but a crucial reminder: laziness and burnout are dangerously close. A few wrong steps in handling laziness can quickly end you up into a burnout.
Don’t make the same mistake I did. Burnout doesn’t come slowly; you only realize when it fully swings.
